Genesis

So you can probably guess the purpose of this blog, but just in case, I'll tell you. I'm using this blog to chronicle my journey from an undergraduate at RPI to a graduate student pursuing a PhD at an unknown university. I have applied to five schools: Drexel, Johns Hopkins, Stanford, University of Michigan Ann Arbor, and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

As of today I have visited Drexel and fallen completely in love with the department. As such Drexel is my first choice. My second, third, and so on have really yet to de be determined as I haven't been able to visit anywhere else. There's something different about someplace once you've visited it, the internet doesn't quite do it justice, it may over or underemphasize it. Which is what I found to be true about Drexel. I went in thinking that it was unlikely to even interest me, but the feel of the department reminded me so much of RPI (which I love and am sad, but excited to leave) that I couldn't help but feel like I belonged. Not only was the general feel fantastic, but the advisors and potential future fellow grad students that I met were all exceedingly nice, and I meshed well with one specific lab, which is actually located in the building shown below, which I think vaguely reminds me of the Biotech Center at RPI.

My greatest fear has been, at least until two days ago, that I wouldn't get into any grad schools. I was afraid to be stuck at home in my parents house for another year waiting to apply again. But that's fortunately not going to happen. I was accepted into University of Michigan! I'm pretty excited about it still and have scheduled my visit for late in March, I just have to call and make my flight reservations and I will be all set.

I have another school to visit before that though. I am currently sitting on an Amtrak train headed to Baltimore Maryland to visit, you guessed it, Johns Hopkins!

I have an interview on Friday at some point, but in the mean time they are feeding me, letting me meet the grad students and go on lab tours. So hopefully this visit will go as well as Drexel and make my decision that much harder. But we'll see!
